After posting an impressive 3-1 record to end the regular season, the Mean Green men’s basketball team could not carry the momentum into the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, losing to the University of Louisiana-Lafayette 74-55 tonight in Hot Springs, Ark.

UNT (12-20, 7-13) fell behind by seven points in the first half and the Ragin’ Cajuns (13-19, 8-12) eventually extended that lead to 19 points in the final moments of the game.

Though UNT showed signs of life in the second half, it failed to make a dent in the ULL lead.

Sophomore guard Jordan Williams paced the Mean Green with 12 points and was three for six from the three-point line.

In what could have been his last game at UNT, sophomore forward Tony Mitchell notched 10 points and 12 rebounds for the 20th double-double of his career. He also had four blocks in the game.

Free throw shooting plagued the Mean Green during the game as the team made 12 of 24 from the stripe.

Senior guard Roger Franklin and senior forward Niko Stojiljkovic both left the game in the second half to standing ovations from the Mean Green faithful that made the trip to Hot Springs.

The 19-point loss was the second of the night for UNT athletics, as the women’s basketball team fell to ULL as well earlier today, 80-74 in double-overtime.

This game was the last time the Mean Green will compete in the Sun Belt, as the team will move to Conference USA next season.
