Junior guard Kelsey Criner scored with 1.8 seconds remaining answering a late, game-tying three by UAB to lift the Mean Green women’s basketball team 53-51 at the Super Pit. Criner finished with 13 points.

Both sides started off slow, taking more than a minute to get on the board. North Texas (8-9, 3-4) struck first with a Candice Adams shot from behind the arc. The threes would be the name of the game for the majority of the first quarter, with the first three makes coming from downtown.

Neither team scored efficiently, but the teams were able to answer each other whenever someone scored. The Blazers (10-8, 3-4) pieced together a run to end the first, allowing them to widen the gap to 17-9 after one quarter of play.

The second quarter was more of the same for both teams. But this time, North Texas put together the run at the end of the quarter, with UAB only making two of their final eight shots. Two quick scores at the end of second quarter two pulled North Texas within seven at half, despite UAB making the most of second chance opportunities thanks to senior forward Brittany Winborne’s four offensive rebounds. North Texas went to the locker-room trailing 27-20, shooting 39.1 percent and trailing the Blazers in rebounds.

After coming out of the locker room, North Texas went on a 6-0 run to begin the second half, putting them within striking distance. Criner and senior forward Acheil Tac led the way for the Mean Green, with Tac scoring six and Criner scoring four in the quarter.

North Texas pounced on their opportunity to win the ballgame in the fourth quarter, as junior guard Terra Ellison pushed North Texas over the top with a big three pointer and bucket.
After a mid-court collision left Criner down on the floor for a moment with just over a minute to go in the game, she returned and scored easily to put North Texas ahead by three with seconds to play. UAB’s Kara Rawls tied the game from behind the arc, but Criner drove the lane to score the deciding basket. With no timeouts left, the Blazers were forced to heave a full-court shot that ultimately failed.

North Texas returns to acion on January 30th when they face Rice University at home.
