Classes are over for the week and everyone needs a place to drink. The question is, “Do we want to go to The Square or do we want to go to Fry street?”
Charles DeVolt, a bartender at Cool Beans, said the majority of his business comes from low price drinks.
During the day students go to Fry to relax and have a casual cheap drink but at night the chill scene quickly turns to a party.
“If you want to go and rage and party with everyone else you’re going to go to Public House or Tavern,” Ryan Williams, UNT senior, 21, said. “But if you just want to grab a beer like I did after my exam just walk over to Lous and hang out in patio.”
Fry not only attracts people because of their prices but also because of how convenient it is to jump from one bar to another.
“I like it here because there are multiple bars and a couple of restaurants,” Shaquan Lynch, a UNT junior, 21, said.
During the day Fry street gives students the convenience to have a quick cheap drink before or after a class to decompress. In the early evening transitioning into night The Square is much compared to Fry street during the day.
A non-traditional student, Erin Bailey, 35, says she prefers going to the Square over Fry.
“I spend a lot more time at the shops and not just focusing on drinking like at Fry,” Bailey said.
Madison McGee, a bartender at Mulberry at Cantina, also sees The Square as a relax environment.
“You don’t have a bunch of crazy big groups running around and being obnoxious,” McGee said.
Safety is another reason why some people choose The Square over Fry.
Matt Farmer, a 23-year-old, said, “I don’t feel like I’m going to be murdered like I do at Fry.”
At the end of the day its all about having a good time. If you want to have a drink and talk The Square may be for you. If you’re looking to dance and party then Fry street would be more for you.
