The Mean Green women’s basketball team played an efficient season opener as they defeated Mid-America Christian University 86-52 Friday afternoon at the Super Pit.

Freshman Lauren Holmes recorded a double-double in her first career start, finishing with 20 points and 12 rebounds while shooting 40 percent from 3-point range.

“We aren’t surprised because she did what she has always done,” head coach Jalie Mitchell said. “We’ve known from day one that she has an extremely high motor and plays both ends of the floor.”

Preseason first-team Conference USA selection Terriell Bradley was also impressive in the season opener, scoring 11 points in the first quarter to lead North Texas out of the gate. Bradley, the team’s leading scorer last season, had 18 points and a career-high six assists in the win.

“I liked the effort that we had today,” Bradley said. “We moved the ball around well, and I thought my efficiency was better from last year.”

Bradley facilitated a well-balanced offensive attack for the Mean Green, as the team had seven scorers with at least eight points in the game. Freshman guard Trena Mims had eight points in her debut while Grace Goodhart (9), Brittany Smith (8) and Jada Poland (8) contributed as well.

Post play was also a big factor in the win for North Texas as the Mean Green used their size to get looks in the paint the entire game. Junior Micayla Buckner shot an efficient 6-for-8 to finish with 12 points while also pulling in seven rebounds.

In the end, field goal percentage was a key factor in the 34-point blow out.  North Texas shot 48 percent compared to the Evangels 30 percent mark. The Mean Green had 15 more rebounds than Mid-America Christian.

After its first game of the season, the new-look North Texas team seems to have found some chemistry right off the bat.

“I like the team chemistry and the team in general,” Holmes said. “They’re really supportive and help me a lot, and I feel we did pretty good for our first game.”

Next up: North Texas looks to start the season 2-0 as the Mean Green take on Texas A&M – International on Nov. 14 at the Super Pit.
