Lantana Golf Club is located about 25 minutes south of campus and is currently the temporary home for the Mean Green men’s golf team.

But nothing about this golf course belongs to North Texas. At times, the team wishes it had its own locker room or a place to hang their hats.

That is about to change.

In December, the Mean Green will begin practicing at its very own facility located in Carrollton, Texas. The facility will be a part of the Honors Golf Club, but it will also be the home of North Texas golf for the foreseeable future.

“It’s going to be one of the best golf facilities in the entire country,” athletic director Rick Villarreal said. “It’s going to have a heated bay, a stretching and training room, a meeting room, [and] a club repair shop. This will have everything this team needs to continue to be successful.”

Last season, North Texas won the Conference USA men’s golf championship and made a surprise run in the NCAA tournament by finishing ninth at the New Haven Regional and falling just short of its bid to reach the NCAA Finals.

The team looks to continue that success this season, and with a new facility on the horizon, head coach Brad Stracke is ready to get started.

“I’m excited for every part of it,” Stracke said. “It’s going to be tremendous and really beneficial.”

The new facility will likely have an impact on recruiting. With a young squad this year that has minimal senior leadership, Stracke said he is encouraged the new training center will attract many potential recruits to Denton.

“The draw is we will call this place home,” Stracke said. “They can use this place as long as they want, use the hitting bays [and] work out. That’s basically the difference. We will utilize all of the courses around the area like normal, but we’ll finally have a course we can go back to.”

The facility will also provide a level of convenience the golf team has missed. Instead of doing its training and practicing in multiple locations, the new venue will provide the Mean Green with multiple training resources. This will enable the team to work on various aspects of their game at once.

“With this new facility, we can work on our driving, our short game, our putting,” junior Cory Churchman said. “We’ll have access to a lot of different things that give us the ability to practice a number of different ways.”

Despite the excitement for the new facility, the location could still be an issue. Located in Carrollton nearly 20 miles from the North Texas campus on a stretch of Interstate 35E that is currently undergoing major construction, some wonder if traveling to the complex will be problematic.

Sophomore Michael Cotton was quick to deflect those beliefs and said he doesn’t anticipate any difficulties with the new facility’s location.

“We’ve dealt with it before, having to drive a ways to go practice,” Cotton said. “Last year we went out there three times a week, so I don’t think it will be any different.”

The North Texas men’s golf team tees off the 2015-2016 season with the Memphis Intercollegiate Tournament in Memphis, Tennessee starting Monday, Sept. 22.
