University of North Texas Athletic Director Wren Baker announced Monday the Mean Green football program has agreed to a home-and-home series with the University of Houston beginning in 2019.

North Texas will host the Cougars at Apogee Stadium in 2019 and travel to Houston in 2023.

“I am excited we were able to agree to this series with Houston,” Baker said in a press release. “It has historically been an evenly-matched series that also has drawn substantial crowds. I am hopeful renewing this this series will be fun and exciting for both fan bases.”

The Mean Green are 7-7 all-time against the Cougars dating back to 1947, but have lost their last two meetings. North Texas opened Apogee Stadium with a game against Houston in 2011 that drew a crowd of 28,075.

The Cougars finished a combined 22-5 over the last two seasons, including a win in the Peach Bowl in 2015 over Florida State University under former head coach Tom Herman, who left the program in November to fill the head coaching vacancy at the University of Texas at Austin.

Meanwhile, North Texas has gone a combined 6-19 over the past two years, including a 1-11 campaign in 2015 that resulted in former head coach Dan McCarney being fired mid-season.  Last season under first-year head coach Seth Littrell, the Mean Green went 5-7 in the regular season and made just their second bowl game in the last decade – the Heart of Dallas Bowl against Army – a game they lost 38-31 in overtime.
