[dropcap]M[/dropcap]ore than a quarter of SGA senators were absent for a referendum vote, which was anticipated by President Zachary Brown.

The referendum would have introduced a $5 per semester fee, which would provide about $400,000 per year toward classroom innovation. Students would have had to vote the fee into effect. The referendum required 30 votes to pass, but only 23 out of 32 active senators attended. It may be introduced in subsequent semesters, but was tabled until further notice.

Undeclared business junior Adam Hasley, whom Brown hailed as a mentor and personal hero, spent a year and a half drafting the referendum. Hasley is currently in China for an internship. Brown and vice president Anthony Brown were absent, instead at the Emerald Eagle Honor Awards dinner.

International studies junior Shamaal Fletcher, who had tried to impeach Zachary and Anthony Brown over not enforcing the attendance policy among other things, presided over the meeting as speaker pro tempe. Fletcher is now in charge of enforcing the attendance policy himself.

“I think with midterms a lot of people have other priorities,” Fletcher said. “That is something that we are going to address throughout the week.”

Undeclared business senior Maria Perez said the lack of senator involvement has stretched beyond meetings. Perez has been working to recruit new senators in the upcoming senatorial elections, but out of the six senators she’d hoped would help, only two did.

“It’s been a constant struggle within senate to get people more involved,” she said.
