UNT President Neal Smatresk made his first President’s Staff Sack Lunch appearance on Tuesday, recognizing staff efforts and discussing future goals for the university.

“What I wanted to talk to you about was kind of family value,” Smatresk said. “Why we’re here, what we’re doing, why we celebrate you.”

Beginning at noon in the Coliseum, Smatresk and Warren Burggren, provost and vice president of academic affairs, honored top performers among university staff members – including the Outstanding Employee, Soaring Eagle and Star Performer awards.

“I want to know what your hopes and dreams for this campus are,” Smatresk said.

He instructed the staff not to hold back, emphasizing the importance of communication and cooperation.

Smatresk answered budget-related questions and said he does not anticipate any layoffs because of the current monetary complications.

“We do have a budget situation. Unfortunately, we don’t actually know the scope of it,” he said. “I’ll simply say we’re digging.”

Smatresk also discussed lighter topics, such as the hobbies he enjoys.

“I love to cook,” he said. “I love to eat as well.”

Throughout the lunch, Smatresk kept a relaxed demeanor, even joking about January’s bowl game.

Smatresk repeatedly expressed his enthusiasm for UNT and moving forward as president.

“This is an incredible opportunity for me and I hope an incredible opportunity for the campus.”
